How the Point System Works If you break traffic laws, you may earn points against your South Carolina driver's license. The purpose of the point system is to make problem drivers improve their driving habits and protect innocent people from careless and reckless drivers. Eight points within three years following the reinstatement of a license can result in an additional suspension. When a driving privilege is reinstated, all previous points on an individual's record are canceled. A driver can see the status of their license, including the number of points assessed on their record, through their MyDMV account. Social Security Number and/or Insurance update(s), if applicable, are available on the Driver License Check results page. To access the driving history of your child under the age of 18, enter the teen's driver license number below. The point system for drivers is one way that the state, as well as insurance companies, can keep tabs on how good a driver you are. Not all states use a point system, but those that do assign points to your driver's license for speeding tickets and other traffic tickets.
